Wooden Door Comparison

Wooden Door Comparison

Wooden doors can be classified according to their opening type (swing doors, sliding doors, folding doors), or according to their purpose. Below is a description of various wooden door types, including their pluses and minuses.

Wooden Door Opening Possibilities

Wooden doors are typically swing type doors (they open either inwards or outwards), but other opening mechanisms are also possible. Four major wooden door opening types are outlined below.

  • Wooden swing doors,
  • Wooden tilt ant turn doors,
  • Wooden sliding doors,
  • Wooden folding doors.

Wooden swing doors are the standard hinged wooden doors, either single panel or double panel, known as French doors. They swing open, either inwards or outwards, depending on the chosen type; no additional ventilation options are included. This is a common option for interior wooden doors and exterior wooden doors, both front doors and back doors. Swing wooden doors are durable and need almost no hardware maintenance.
Wooden tilt and turn doors have three opening positions: tilt for ventilation, swing open for passage, and night vent for trickle ventilation. This type of wooden doors is convenient when the room has no operable windows; tilt and turn wooden doors can be used for both air ventilation and access. This is a popular choice for balconies and patios. However, tilt and turn wooden doors are less durable compared to the regular swing type wooden doors. Tilt and turn wooden doors open inwards as standard.
Wooden sliding doors are usually made of two panels, one sliding over the other in parallel. This is very useful in small rooms, as sliding wooden doors take no extra space when opened. Sliding wooden doors come in different sizes and can be quite wide, due to their reinforced wooden profiles. This allows for large glazing units, which will provide much natural light and broad views into the outside. Sliding wooden doors are often chosen as patio doors, balcony doors, garden doors, etc. They are easy to operate and quiet. Most sliding doors can be stopped and locked in any opening position.
Wooden folding doors are gaining popularity in many countries. They are made of two or more wooden door panels connected to each other. Folding wooden doors open by folding one by the other in a manner similar to the accordion. This allows to save space and to open a wide area all at once. Folding wooden doors can be very wide if needed, so that to make an impressive connection of the inside with the outside. Folding wooden doors are often used as an exit to a patio or garden. They add aesthetic value to your home.
