Wooden Door Measurements

Wooden Door Measurements

Wooden Door Measurements in the Price Calculator

In order to calculate the price of your selected wooden doors, please enter the following:

  • measurements in millimetres (height * width)

Limitations for height and width are given below the input boxes. After you enter the required wooden door measurements, you will see the price of a standard wooden door of your choice. Later you can change the specifications of your selected wooden doors by using different options shown in the price calculator, and see the price difference.
Note:
Below is a detailed instruction of how to measure wooden doors. However, we strongly advise you to call a specialist to take measurements for you. If you need information on non-standard sized wooden doors or wish a specialist to take the door measurements for you, please contact our staff. Send us an e-mail

Importance of Accurate Wooden Door Measurements

Wooden door measurements should be taken carefully. Before ordering new wooden doors, it is important to accurately measure the height and width of the door opening. It is also important to check if the angles of the opening are all 90°. If the new wooden door is too small or too large for the existing door opening, this may harm its heat and sound insulation properties. The wooden door construction may undergo unequal pressure and eventually fail. Even if you choose the best available wooden doors but do not know how to measure doors correctly, their benefits cannot be fully enjoyed. You should also take into consideration the following aspects:

  • Note the size limitations for wooden door height and width and try not to get too close. For example, exterior wooden doors can be no larger than 2400 x 1000 mm, because then there is a risk of wooden door subsiding and problems in opening /closing of the wooden door. If the measurements of your required wooden doors are close to the maximum dimensions, it is advisable to consider alternative wooden door options. This way you can avoid possible problems in the future.
  • Choose the right size of gaps around wooden doors (between the wooden door and door opening).
  • Make sure that there is a safe way to bring the wooden doors of your chosen size to the door opening (whether wooden doors will fit through the entrance door and interior doors).

Only when wooden door measurements are taken correctly can you be sure that the wooden doors will be durable, provide the best heat and sound insulation, prevent burglaries, etc. In the signed agreement, the customer has to specify the exact amount and measurements of wooden doors and their accessories that he/she intends to buy (the measurements are revised by our staff), as well as to indicate whether wooden doors are to be installed by our staff or individually, the preferred installation method, if there is such, and other wooden door finish if the customer orders it.

How to Measure Wooden Doors

If you decide to take wooden door measurements on your own, here are some basic rules for doing this:

  • It is the door measurements that should be entered in the price calculator. However, it is convenient to measure the door opening first and then to subtract the width of gaps needed for insulation. When measuring exterior wooden doors, it is convenient to take brickwork as your reference points.
  • Height and width of the door opening have to be measured in three locations: height of the opening is measured on the left side, in the centre and on the right side; width of the opening is measured at the top, central part and at the bottom. This is done in case the door opening is warped. The smallest of the three measurements is registered.
  • It is important to determine whether the door opening is a square (all the angles are 90°). For this purpose you can use a spirit level or another tool. Alternatively, you can measure the two diagonals of the door opening and compare them. If the diagonals do not match, the door opening is not a rectangle and this must be marked in the draft.
  • Gaps between the wooden door frame and aperture must be at least 15 mm wide on each of the four sides; this will be used for insulation.
  • Wooden door handing has to be clearly indicated in the draft; wooden doors may be left hand or right hand. Depending on the selected wooden door profile, there is a possibility to choose inward opening and outward opening wooden doors.

It is also important to plan the following:

  • The method to be used when installing wooden doors, whether it is drilling through the frame or using cleats (straps) to fix the wooden door in the aperture.
  • Whether the floor is already finished or not; it is important to take into consideration the height of the floor after they are finished, and install wooden doors at this height.
  • The correct width of gaps between the wooden door frame and door opening so that to insert insulating foam. This is calculated according to the selected installation method and building requirements.
  • As was already mentioned, it is important to pay special attention to the size limitations of wooden doors in order to prevent any future problems like difficult opening /closing, glass fracture or profile warping issues.

Following these rules you will have the correct measurements for wooden doors which will prevent cold draughts, provide a sufficient sound insulation, remove any critical static load, prevent burglary attempts and stay the same for many years. Specific details of how to measure wooden doors are given in the next section.

Wooden Door Measuring Step by Step

1.    Measure the height and width of the aperture. Each dimension has to be measured three times: height is measured on the left side, in the centre and on the right side; width is measured at the top, central part and at the bottom. The smallest of the three measurements is registered.
2.    Determine the size of wooden doors that you need. Consider the width of gaps to be left around the perimeter (which will be used for inserting sealant) and note down the wooden door measurements in millimetres. These measurements will be required in the price calculator.
3.    Check whether the door opening is a rectangle (all angles have to be 90°). You can use a spirit level or another tool. Alternatively, you can measure the two diagonals of the door opening and compare them.

4.    Indicate the handing and opening direction of your chosen wooden door (whether opening inwards or outwards). For example, you are looking from the inside of the room, wooden door opens inwards and the handle is on the left. Use a solid line to indicate an inward-opening wooden door (looking from the inside). Use a dotted line to indicate an outward-opening wooden door (looking from the outside).
5.    When taking measurements for wooden doors, you should keep in mind the standard door sizes and adjust your measurements accordingly. Additionally, floor level should be indicated. Responsibility for the standard wooden door measurements and floor level marking is carried by the foreman who is carrying out the installation. A mark should be made 1 metre above floor level (marked OFF). 1 metre mark should be made in all rooms where wooden doors and wooden windows are to be installed. Measurements should be taken using a laser measuring device or another accurate measuring device.

6.    Tolerable inaccuracies. There are certain tolerable inaccuracies while taking measurements for wooden doors. Measurements of wooden door aperture can be +-12 mm, while the total inaccuracy can be up to 24 mm. Measurements of wooden doors can be +-2 mm, while the total inaccuracy can be up to 4 mm.

The width of the gap between wooden door frame and aperture may be different in each individual case; this is determined by the type of aperture and the type of sealant used, namely the expansion rate, indicated by the manufacturer.
