Wooden Door Colour Prices

Wooden door colour prices depend on the type of coating (paint, stain or varnish), and on the selected colour configuration. If both interior and exterior of a wooden door is coated in the same colour, the price is lower. If different colours are chosen for interior and exterior, the price increases. All paint colours have the same price.

Wooden Door Colours

Wood is a natural building material and depending on the selected species, has a specific colour and grain pattern. By using paint, stain or varnish, this natural colour can be preserved and highlighted, or changed to match the interior or exterior of the room. Wooden doors can have one of the following coating options:

- Paint (solid colour),
- Stain (translucent colour),
- Varnish (no colour or translucent colour),
- Different coating for each side.

Paint. Wooden doors can be painted in your selected solid colour. Painting offers a wide range of colour options from white to vivid red, blue, green, and other colours to go with your chosen design. Painting of wooden doors forms a film on the surface, which gives a smooth and clean appearance. Additionally, paint can help concealing small imperfections of the wood. However, the natural grain pattern of wood is deemphasized, though not entirely lost. Painting your wooden doors gives them the best protection against UV radiation, as paint has a stronger pigmentation compared to other types of coating. For maximum UV protection, choose white or a pale colour. Dark colours tend to accumulate heat, so there may be problems with resin appearing and longevity of the paint. Therefore, dark shades of paint should be avoided in south or west-facing wooden doors.
Stain. If your goal is to highlight the natural grain pattern of wooden doors, then stain is the best option. Stains come in various colours which are translucent (the wood pattern underneath is clearly visible). However, staining highlights all imperfections or spots on the surface of wood, so more preparation is needed (the surface has to be carefully sanded). The protection against UV radiation depends greatly on the selected colour of the stain: darker colours have more pigmentation so they are better at resisting UV rays; wooden doors that are stained in dark shades will consequently require less maintenance. Bright stain colours have less pigmentation and are therefore less resistant to UV rays. Because of this, you will need to re-stain the bright-stained wooden doors more often. Transparent stains that have no colour have poor UV-resistance and so are not recommended for exterior applications. The major benefit of stain is its drying time, which takes less than 30 minutes.
Varnish. Wooden doors are usually varnished on the interior side only. If exposed to rain, direct sunshine and changing temperatures, varnish is bound to deteriorate faster that other types of coating. Varnish is solvent-based, and forms a thin layer on the surface of wood. This layer is unable to move together with wood, so it can peel more quickly. Varnish is usually clear, but there are tinted or coloured options as well. Clear varnish is used when the focus is put on wood and its natural colour. Tinted varnish can alter the natural colour into any of your preferred colours, this way giving the appearance of a more expensive wood species. Hide

Wooden Door Colour Maintenance

Wooden doors require more maintenance compared to other types of doors, and this is mainly because all the coatings of wooden doors such as paint, stain, and varnish have a relatively short (2-10 years) service life. The coatings are often exposed to humidity, UV radiation, dry weather, and temperature fluctuations - the factors that gradually cause damage. Cleaning. Wooden door frames should be cleaned twice a year with a mild solution or a special wood cleaner to remove dirt. This helps to prevent mould.
Caring. Wooden door frames should be treated with a special wood balsam once a year to extend the life of the coating.
Regular inspection. It is important to regularly check the coating of wooden doors (especially on the exterior side) for any scratches or peeling. It is important to touch up all exposed areas without delay by using a touch up paint or other product.
Re-coating. Once every several years, the whole surface finish should be re-coated, depending on the type of the coating used. The old coating may either be removed by sanding, or simply cleaned and covered by a new layer of coating. Choosing the best coating. When choosing paint, stain or varnish for wooden doors, several things should be considered.
- Coating should be elastic. Wooden doors, especially those made of solid wood, react to humidity or dryness and sudden changes in temperature, which may cause wood to expand or contract. Usually this movement is barely noticeable, but it can well affect the longevity of the coating. If the coating is not elastic, then it can crack and eventually peel. Wooden doors should be coated by using such products that allow for wood movement.
- Coating should allow evaporation. Some vapour may accumulate under the wooden door coating due to excessive humidity inside the room. So it is important that the coating would allow for such vapour to escape. A porous coating is recommended. Hide

After this period, it is recommended to re-coat the surface using high-quality products. The guarantee specifies that wooden door colour coating will not flake or peel (provided that relative humidity in the room does not exceed 60 %).
