Wooden Profile Prices

Wooden profiles come in several types, and each of them has a slightly different price. Economy budget profile is the cheapest option. Wooden profiles that are suitable for the passive house are more expensive. Price is the highest for outward opening casement window profile.

Wooden Profile Types

Wooden profile refers to the frame and sash of wooden windows - in other words, it is the whole wooden part of the window. In contrast to PVC profiles which are hollow, wooden profiles are solid; wood is already a good thermal insulator, so there is no need for air cavities. The standard wooden windows are inward opening (known as European windows), but outward opening windows (known as casement windows) are also available. Narrow wooden profiles. Wooden profiles can be narrow (Economy budget profile) or wide (Passive house profile). Generally it can be stated that the wider the wooden profile, the better heat and sound insulation is achieved. Narrow wooden profiles are usually made of glued laminated wood that involves three layers. Narrow profiles range between 68 mm and 80 mm in depth; they are moderately priced and have fairly good heat and sound insulation properties. Usually double glazing and triple glazing can be considered as glazing options, but with certain restrictions. Wooden windows made of narrow profile are suitable for apartment buildings, private houses, office buildings, etc.
Wide wooden profiles are better at insulating heat and sound. They are usually made of glued laminated wood that involves four layers. All wooden profiles that are wider than 90 mm are put under this label. If you choose a wide profile for your new wooden windows, you have a chance to choose a better glazing (double or triple glazing) for superior heat and sound insulation. Wide wooden profiles have a higher price, but this pays back in time: you save money on heating bills. Wooden windows made of wide profiles are recommended for private houses in colder climates, as well as for passive house projects.
Casement window profiles are popular in Northern Europe, especially in areas of strong winds and rain. Casement window profile is designed to open outwards; this proves very beneficial in severe climates, as the strong wind presses the sash firmly against the frame thus improving the weather tightness of the wooden window. Another advantage of casement window profile is saving space: these wooden windows open outwards, so you can use the space on window sills and put furniture close to the wooden windows.
Aluminium clad wooden profiles. Wooden windows can be made maintenance-free by covering their exterior by a cladding made of aluminium. There are two ways of producing aluminium cladding: roll-forming and extrusion. Roll formed aluminium cladding is usually quite thin, so it can be easily shaped and bent, while extruded aluminium cladding is thicker and does not bend easily. Extruded aluminium cladding is more expensive, but it is regarded as a better, more durable option for wooden windows. Aluminium cladding wraps the whole exterior of wooden windows, apart from glazing: cladding covers frame and sash of wooden windows. There are several colours that can be selected for the cladding. Wooden Profile Materials

Wooden window profiles are made of natural wood. Several factors should be considered when choosing materials for your new wooden windows, namely wood species (whether a softwood or hardwood), wood quality (whether clear or knotty), and the production technique (solid wood or engineered wood).

Wood Species

Wooden windows can be made of various wood species. All of them can be classified as either hardwood or softwood. These names should not be taken literally: some kinds of softwood can be hard while some kinds of hardwood may be relatively soft. Softwood is produced from trees that are evergreen and have leaves that look like needles, such as pine and fir, among others. Softwoods are more vulnerable to weather conditions than hardwoods; they are not as durable. Therefore, softwoods are more often used in the interior, e.g. interior wooden doors. However, softwoods are cheaper and grow fast, which makes them attractive to wooden window manufacturers. New technologies are introduced to make softwood more resistant and suitable for windows: softwood is often treated before use. It is important to note that softwood has a better thermal insulation compared to hardwood.
Hardwood is produced from such trees that have large leaves which fall in the autumn. Examples include oak, ash, beech, mahogany, and many others. Hardwoods are strong and durable and they have a better weather resistance compared to softwood. For this reason, hardwoods are preferred in exterior applications, such as wooden windows and exterior wooden doors. Hardwoods are typically more expensive and are regarded as more beautiful. In some cases, hardwood veneer is used to cover softwood so that to give it the appearance of a more expensive wood species. When used for wooden windows, knotty wood is carefully treated to remove all imperfections. Clear wood is already without any blemishes or imperfections and has a more solid appearance. Usually clear wood looks great in different styles and applications. If well-maintained, both kinds of wood can be durable; however, clear wood is considered to give less trouble. Benefits of engineered wood are numerous:
- Engineered wood is tough and durable.
- It has a higher resistance to shrinking and expanding than solid wood.
- All knots and blemishes are removed, so engineered wood has a more attractive appearance.
- Engineered wood can be painted and varnished right away, as opposed to solid wood which requires some time for settling.
- There is less timber waste in producing engineered wood.
- There are almost no restrictions on the size (width and length) of engineered wood products.

Aluminium Drainage Strips

Wooden window profiles are often weather-proofed by fixing aluminium drainage strips. Long and narrow strips of aluminium are usually fixed along the bottom rail of wooden windows (both frame and sash) to prevent accumulation of water. Aluminium drainage strips are bevelled which allows for easy drainage of water. Aluminium drainage strips are commonly used for both inward opening and outward opening wooden windows. Drainage strips are made with plastic caps which cover the sharp edges of aluminium strips. Aluminium drainage strips come in several colours, with aluminium, white and brown as standard.

Wooden Profile Seals

Wooden profiles include seals or gaskets which weather-proof all possible gaps around the wooden window perimeter. A seal is a narrow rubber band that is fixed all around the wooden window, primarily between frame and sash. Wooden window seal is compressed by closing the wooden window. As there are no remaining gaps around the perimeter, no cold, rain or wind can enter the room. Usually there are two or three perimeters of window seal, depending on the type of wooden windows:

Two perimeters of window seal is a standard option for residential buildings.
Three perimeters of window seal are used in special cases when the best heat and sound insulation is required, e.g. for the Passive House.

Wooden windows look better when window seals are invisible from the outside. Therefore many wooden windows feature low level gasket lines which are almost unnoticeable when the wooden window is closed. Wooden window gaskets need maintenance once a year; it is advisable to clean the gaskets and apply some silicone solution so that the rubber would retain its sealing properties. Wooden window gaskets come in different colours which can be fitted to the colour of your wooden windows.

Wooden Profile Colour

Wooden window profiles can be painted, stained or varnished in various colours. There is a choice among standard colours and non-standard colours, as well as an option to highlight the natural grain pattern of wood. Wooden profiles can be coloured from both sides; there is a possibility to choose different colours for each side.

Wooden Profile Guarantee

Wooden profiles usually come with a 5 year guarantee, depending on the type. The guarantee is outlined in the agreement to be signed prior to the manufacturing process. The guarantee ensures that the wooden profile will not crack as a result of poor production or its weight (provided that relative humidity in the room does not exceed 60 %).
