Security doors often come with the following elements as standard.

5. Two perimeters of soft door seals to prevent sound, wind or dust from entering through the gap between the security door leaf and frame.
6. Security door finish depends on the type of security door selected. Available finish options include marine plywood, laminated particle board, medium density fibreboard MDF, and uPVC panel. When steel security doors are selected, no finish panels are used.

Security Door Specifications

Quality of security doors can be determined using the following criteria.

Security door characteristics are heavily influenced by the presence or absence of door mouldings or decorative strips that cover the seams around the security door. The best effect is achieved by fitting door mouldings on both interior and exterior side of security doors.

Security doors all share the tough and durable steel structure. However, the exterior of security doors can vary greatly, depending on the requirements of the customer. For those seeking a natural and traditional finish, security doors can be covered by a panel made of laminated particle board, plywood, medium density fibreboard MDF, or okoume plywood. Panels for security doors are selected according to their purpose (whether used for house security doors or apartment security doors) and their price. Below is a short description of each type of security door finish.
Laminated particle board is the cheapest finish option for security doors. Particle board is made of wood chips and shavings which are compressed together using a synthetic binding material. To improve its appearance, particle board is laminated or covered by a wood veneer. Particle board has low density and is prone to damage by water, so it should be used for interior applications only, e.g. for apartment security doors. Security doors with laminated particle board exterior have no patterns or carvings, because carving of particle board is problematic. When patterns are required, security doors with medium density fibreboard MDF finish are recommended.
Water-proof plywood is a cheap finish option for exterior security doors. Water-proof plywood is laminated to resist humidity and water. It is usually selected for security doors of non-residential buildings. Security doors with water-proof plywood exterior come in several colours and patterns. However, patterns carved on water-proof plywood are less durable than patterns carved on MDF or Okoume plywood panels.
Medium density fibreboard MDF is a high quality finish option for all types of security doors. MDF is made of compressed wood fibres which are bound together using wax and resin. MDF has a higher density compared to particle board, so it is stronger and more durable. MDF panels are suitable for both apartment security doors and house security doors; when security doors are exposed to the elements, water-proof MDF panels are used. MDF panels can be either laminated (uPVC coating) or painted. Painting is a better option, because it makes MDF even more resistant to weather conditions. MDF panels have many design options: you can choose a carving pattern from a wide selection, or you can order a bespoke pattern. Security doors with MDF exterior have a higher price compared to security doors with laminated particle board or water-resistant plywood exterior.
Okoume plywood is one of the most expensive finish options for security doors. Okoume plywood is produced by combining thin layers of different species of wood, and pressing them together. The usual combination is that of okoume wood and mahogany, with okoume wood veneer glued onto the surface. Okoume plywood is perfect for exterior security doors, because it is highly resistant to damaging weather conditions such as rain, UV rays, and wind. Security. Security doors are designed bearing in mind the crime tendencies and the tools and techniques that are typically used to enter a property illegally. All vulnerable parts of the door construction are reinforced to make them more resistant to forced damage. Security doors are made of strong steel profiles with steel face sheets that are 1.5 or 2 mm thick, to make it nearly impossible to penetrate the door. Security door frame is fixed to the wall by reinforced bolts that are almost impossible to cut using standard tools. Security of the door is further reinforced by installing high quality locks; two different locks are installed as standard. Locks are usually covered by anti-drill plates that prevent drilling. Security door hinges are also secured by using dog bolts that keep the door leaf in place even if the hinges are cut.
Thermal efficiency. Security doors are filled with rock wool, polystyrene or polyurethane to achieve high levels of thermal insulation. Additionally, two perimeters of door seals are used between the door leaf and frame; door seals enclose all gaps and prevent cold draughts. This way a low U-factor is reached (low U-factor indicates high thermal efficiency of the door). Leaks are minimized and you can save on your energy bills.
Noise control. Due to the insulating material that fills the cavities of security doors, they become a good sound barrier. This is one reason why security doors are recommended for apartments: they dampen the sounds coming from the corridor.
Odour control. Security doors are sealed against air leak, so they also prevent smells coming from the outside or from the corridor (cigarette smoke, food smells).
Fire resistance. This feature is available in selected models of security doors. Fire rated security doors prevent the spread of fire, e.g. when fire starts in the corridor of a communal building. Fire rated doors are capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1000°C. Many EU countries hold fire rated doors obligatory in all apartment buildings.
Durability. Security doors are made of steel, so they are strong and durable. As the manufacturing of security doors is factory controlled, it is ensured that the details are cut very precisely. Hardware of security doors is reinforced to bear the weight of the door, and is usually capable of 100 000 to 200 000 opening cycles—more than uPVC doors or wooden doors. What is more, the steel exterior of security doors is covered by a paint which prevents corrosion.
Low maintenance. The steel core of security doors is usually covered by a laminated or painted panel, typically made of laminated particle board or MDF. These panels are easy to clean, and require little maintenance.
Flexible design. The colour and design of security doors can be selected from a list of different options. Security doors usually come with a 1-5 year guarantee, if not specified otherwise. The guaranteed period may be longer or shorter, depending on the type of security doors. This is always specified in the agreement to be signed prior to the manufacturing process.
