Roller shutters involve the following parts: curtain, shutter box, guide rails, and control mechanism.
Roller shutter curtain is made from a number of horizontal slats, which are put adjacent to each other, forming the face of the shutter. There are various slat profiles available: single wall slats are thin, while double wall slats are thicker, and have one or more air cavities for increased strength and thermal performance. Double wall slats are usually used when roller shutters are large, or when they are built on industrial and business buildings. Slats come in different heights, with 39 mm to 77 mm as the most common options. The size of roller shutter slats is chosen according to the size of the shutter: large roller shutters need larger and thicker slats. The slats are often insulated, that is, the cavities of the slats are filled with an insulating material such as polyurethane or rock wool. This forms a thermal barrier, and helps maintain comfortable temperatures both in summer and in winter. The slats can be with or without perforations. Perforated slats have small holes which allow some light and ventilation even when the shutters are closed. Perforated, punched and solid slats can be combined in different ways to achieve the necessary light and privacy combination.
Shutter box is fixed above the window or door, either inside or outside the building. Roller shutters retract into this box when they are closed. Shutter boxes come in several shapes: they can be bevelled, square or oval, depending on your preferences. If you are building a new house, consider a hidden shutter box option; the box is integrated with the lintel above the window, and is unnoticeable from the outside. If necessary, the shutter box can be accessed from below. Shutter boxes are usually 125 mm to 355 mm wide. Their size is chosen according to the height of the curtain.
Guide rails are metal strips along both sides of the window or door. They support the edges of the curtain while it is moving up or down, so they are very important to the smooth operation of roller shutters. Guide rails are usually 45 mm to 90 mm in width; the necessary width is determined according to the size of the shutters. Large shutters require wider guide rails, for better stability.
Mechanism. Roller shutters are raised and rolled into the shutter box above the window or door, in a manner very similar to roller blinds. All control cords or switches are located on the interior side of the room. Roller shutters are usually fitted over large windows and patio doors. Roller shutters with a fly screen combine a shutter and a retractable screen. This is a practical choice; the shutter and the insect screen are both installed in the same shutter box in such a way that one would not hinder the other.
