Fly Screen Types

Fly screens are indispensable during the spring and summer months, when the air is full of different kinds of flies, mosquitos, and plant fuzz. Fly screens will seal the windows and doors in both your office and home, ensuring worry-free work and rest. When windows and doors are covered with fly screens, the rooms can be ventilated as usual: there will be no obstructions to air flow or view. Fly screens are usually made of aluminium or glass fibre which form a strong and durable insect mesh. Fly screens can be used to cover windows and doors of all shapes and sizes, and are suitable for uPVC windows, wooden windows, and aluminium windows. Fly screens can be installed both internally and externally, so they are equally suitable for private homes and high rise buildings. There are several types of fly screens for different purposes and situations.

Fixed Fly Screens

Fixed fly screens are the cheapest fly screen option currently available. They involve an insect mesh, a frame, and fittings. There are two ways to fit this type of fly screen to a window: either by using metal clips or magnets. In the first case, fly screens are secured in place by metal clips which can be easily unfastened when the fly screens are not used. Magnetic fly screens are fixed to the window frame using magnets. Magnetic fly screens have a magnet plate in each of the four corners; four magnets are also fixed on the four corners of a window. The fly screen is then held in place. The magnets can be fixed to the window frame in two ways: using screws or adhesive tapes. Fixed fly screens are fitted in such a way that they would not hinder the opening of the window. In winter, fixed fly screens can be easily removed. Regardless of the chosen fly screen type, four types of insect mesh can be used:

1. Standard grey or black materials for fly screens are practical; they have low prices compared to other fly screen materials.
2. Pollen screen materials have a higher density, and so they stop pollen which could cause allergy. Pollen screens can resist more that 90 % of pollen that appears in the warm season. Despite their density, pollen screens allow plenty of air for easy room ventilation.
3. Striped grey and white materials are intended for making the fly screen more visible.
4. Invisible materials are manufactured from carbon fiber, and are almost indiscernible. More light and sunshine can flow into the rooms, while the view into the outside is unobstructed.

Fixed fly screens typically have brush seals along the outer edges of the frame, in order to prevent possible gaps. Fixed fly screens can be fitted on windows of various shapes, including triangle and trapezium. When a fly screen is larger than 1500 mm (height or width), it is recommended to use an aluminium cross profile which will divide the fly screen in half, improving rigidity. In some models, hinges have springs that close the door immediately. Usually, magnet catches are used to keep the door screen closed. Hinged door screens often come with a kick plate for when your hands are full. Hinged door screens can be fixed in several locations: on the wall outside the door recess, inside the door recess, or on the frame of the door. They are suitable for many types of exterior doors and patio doors. When the door is larger than 2000 mm in height, it is recommended to use an aluminium cross profile which will divide the fly screen in half, improving rigidity. Retractable screens are fitted on the interior or exterior side of a window or door. They can be matched with most kinds of windows, doors, and even skylight windows. Retractable screens feature aluminium tracks along both sides of the opening; these strips of aluminium support the mesh while it is moving up and down, preventing wrinkling. The tracks are lined with brush, to make the sides of the retractable screen fully protected from insects. All aluminium parts of retractable screens are coated with polyester or powder coating, for increased performance during the years. Adjustable hook is used to secure the screen when it is open. Since many retractable screens are spring loaded for easy operation, it is advisable that a spring brake is also installed. While spring loaded operation is the standard, there are some retractable screen models that use a chain to roll the screen up. Retractable screens can be fitted with handles and pulleys, for easy control. Standard colours of retractable screen cassette are white and brown, but some other RAL colours are also available. It must be noted that once installed, retractable screens are not dismantled, even during the winter. Retractable screen mesh is rolled inside the cassette, so it is protected from the harsh climate conditions, and can be used again once the spring comes. Compared to other types of fly screens, retractable screens have a longer service life: they are rolled out only when necessary, while at other times they are safely housed in the cassette.

The main advantage of pleated screens is their low threshold (less than 8 mm) which leaves the passage unobstructed.
