Aluminium Window Measurements

Aluminium Window Measurements

Aluminium Window Measurements in the Price Calculator

In order to calculate the price of your selected aluminium windows, please enter the following:

  • measurements in millimetres (height * width)

Limitations for height and width are given below the input boxes. After you enter the measurements of your required aluminium windows, you will see the price of a standard aluminium window of your choice. Later you can change the specifications of your selected aluminium windows by using different options shown in the price calculator, and see the price difference.
Note:
Below is a detailed instruction of how to measure aluminium windows.  However, we strongly advise you to call a specialist to take measurements for you. If you need information on non-standard sized aluminium windows or wish a specialist to take the window measurements for you, please contact our staff. Send us an e-mail

Importance of Accurate Aluminium Window Measurements

Aluminium windows are usually custom made in your specified size, so it is very important to provide accurate measurements; mistakes in measurement cannot be corrected once the aluminium window is manufactured. Before ordering new aluminium windows, you should take time measuring the height and width of the window opening, and calculate the required aluminium window size according to recommendations. Even if you choose the best available aluminium windows but do not know how to measure windows correctly, their benefits cannot be fully enjoyed. You should also take into consideration the following aspects:

  • Note the size limitations for aluminium window height and width and try not to get too close. If the measurements of your required aluminium window are close to the maximum dimensions, it is advisable to consider alternative aluminium window options. This way you can avoid possible problems in the future.
  • Choose the right size of gaps around the aluminium window (between the aluminium window and aperture).
  • Make sure that there is a safe way to carry aluminium windows of your specified size to the window opening (whether they will fit through the entrance door and interior doors).
  • Choose interior and exterior window sills of the right length, if they are to be used.

Only when aluminium window measurements are taken correctly can you be sure that the aluminium windows will be durable, provide the best heat and sound insulation, prevent burglaries, etc. Before signing the agreement, the customer has to specify the exact amount and measurements of aluminium windows, window sills and other accessories that he/she intends to buy (the measurements are revised by our staff), as well as indicate whether the aluminium windows are to be installed by our staff, the preferred installation method, if there is such, and other interior finish if the customer orders it.

How to Measure Aluminium Windows

If you decide to take aluminium window measurements on your own, here are some basic rules for doing this:

  • It is the window measurements that should be entered in the price calculator. However, it is convenient to measure the aperture first and then to subtract the width of gaps needed for insulation.
  • Height and width of the aperture have to be measured in three locations: height of the aperture is measured on the left side, in the centre and on the right side; width of the aperture is measured at the top, central part and at the bottom. This is done in case the window opening is warped.
  • It is important to determine whether the window opening is a rectangle (all the angles are 90 degrees). For this purpose you can use a spirit level or another tool. Alternatively, you can measure the two diagonals of the window opening and compare them. If the diagonals do not match, the window opening is not a rectangle and this must be marked in the draft.
  • Gaps between the aluminium window and window opening must be at least 15 mm wide on each of the four sides; this will be used for insulation.
  • Aluminium window handing has to be clearly indicated in the draft. Aluminium windows may be left hand or right hand. There is also a possibility to choose inward-opening and outward-opening aluminium windows.

It is also important to plan the following:

  • The method to be used when installing aluminium windows, whether it is drilling through the frame or using cleats to fix the aluminium window in the window opening.
  • Whether the project includes window sills or not.
  • The correct width of gaps between the aluminium window and aperture so that to insert insulating foam. This is calculated according to the selected installation method and building requirements.
  • As was already mentioned, it is important to pay special attention to the size limitations of aluminium windows in order to prevent any future problems like difficult opening / closing, glass fracture or profile warping.

Following these rules you will have the correct measurements for aluminium windows which will prevent cold bridges, provide a sufficient heat and sound insulation, prevent burglary attempts and stay beautiful for many years. Specific details of how to measure aluminium windows are given in the next section.

Aluminium Window Measuring Step by Step

1.  Measure the height and width of the aperture. Each dimension has to be measured three times: height is measured on the left side, in the centre and on the right side; width is measured at the top, central part and at the bottom. The smallest of the three measurements is registered.
2.  Determine the size of aluminium windows that you need. Consider the width of gaps to be left around the perimeter (which will be used for inserting sealant) and note down the aluminium window measurements in millimetres.
3.  Check whether the window opening is a rectangle (all angles have to be 90 degrees). You can use a spirit level or another tool. Alternatively, you can measure the two diagonals of the window opening and compare them.

4.  Indicate the handing and opening direction of your chosen aluminium window (whether opening inwards or outwards). For example, you are looking from the inside of the room, aluminium window opens inwards and the handle is on the left. Use a solid line to indicate an inward opening aluminium window (looking from the inside). Use a dotted line to indicate an outward opening aluminium window (looking from the outside).

5.  When taking measurements for aluminium doors, you should keep in mind the standard door sizes and adjust your measurements accordingly. Additionally, floor level should be indicated. Responsibility for accurate aluminium door measurements and floor level marking is carried by the foreman who is carrying out the installation. A mark should be made 1 metre above floor level (marked OFF). 1 metre mark should be made in all rooms where aluminium windows and doors are to be installed. Measurements should be taken using a laser measuring device or another accurate measuring device.

6.  Tolerable inaccuracies. There are certain tolerable inaccuracies while taking measurements. Measurements of aluminium window aperture can be +-12 mm, while the total inaccuracy can be up to 24 mm. Measurements of aluminium windows can be +-2 mm, while the total inaccuracy can be up to 4 mm.

The width of the gaps between aluminium window and aperture may be different in each individual case; this is determined by the type of aperture and the type of sealant used, namely the expansion rate, indicated by the manufacturer.
